Cleaning the Rat Zapper
If you hear buzzing when you turn the Rat Zapper on, please start here: Take the Rat Zapper into a dark room and turn it on. If the buzzing starts, you should see sparking. Wherever you see a spark arcing across the "gap" that surrounds the Kill Plate, that is where you should clean. Please continue to read for specific cleaning instructions. If you do not hear buzzing when you turn the Rat Zapper on, please start here: Caution: before cleaning the Rat Zapper, remove all batteries for safety! Step 1: If you look inside the Rat Zapper, you will see a small metal plate that looks like an island in the floor of the Kill Chamber. You may also notice that there is a half inch gap that surrounds the small metal plate. For your Rat Zapper to operate at maximum efficiency, you must ensure that this gap is clear of debris or residue on all four sides. Debris or residue in this gap can trigger the Rat Zapper and it can also draw energy away from a rodent. The best way to clean the zapper is to soak a toothbrush or paper towel in alcohol and run it inside the gap that surrounds the Kill Plate. This will dissolve any built up residue and alcohol tends to evaporate fairly quickly. Repeat this cleaning as many times as necessary. If you are dealing with rats, always use our "pre-baiting" procedure after cleaning. Step 2: If you look inside the Rat Zapper and the Kill Plate is not shiny, there may be a layer of dust or dirt there. This layer of dust or dirt can act like electrical insulation and it may prevent all of the energy from getting to the mouse or rat. In fact, it may prevent the Rat Zapper from even being triggered. The best way to clean the zapper is to soak a paper towel in alcohol and wipe the Kill Plate and the metal surface in front and back of the Kill Plate. This will wash away dust and dirt and alcohol tends to evaporate fairly quickly. Repeat this cleaning as many times as necessary. If you are dealing with rats, always use our "pre-baiting" procedure after cleaning. You may also want to check out our Battery Info page to learn an easy way to test the Rat Zapper. |
